"...The hypnotic song "Wild Fire" opens "You Can Have the Rest" impressively with an ominous exotic cello sound and brings in a Native American flute riff that practically pulls you into the desert at dusk for a harmonic convergence. Like the rest of the album, the instrumentation and production is impeccable, and the sisters' voices blend and braid with amazing clarity and depth, their guitars percolate brightly, and the intensity builds to incendiary proportions with layers of percussion gradually added to the mix." --Patrick Jacobs (Spokesman Review)
Shook Twins, Katelyn and Laurie, have been singing together since the womb. They have been creating music for the past five years and playing live for three.
Laurie plays the banjo mostly, as well as the guitar, ocarina (clay flute), slide, face drum (beat boxing) and also loops her vocals, banjo and guitar to create a full, and eerie ambience or a beat. Katelyn just sticks to the guitar, and plays a little slide and banjo, however she is the one that has written most of the 25(ish) original Shook Twins songs. Both the twins switch off singing the melody. Their voices blend identically, making it sound like one voice. They are known for their chilling harmonies.
They are different and precise in their progressive folk, sound. They now draw quite a crowd due to their large Northwest following. In their 2 to 3 hour set they play mostly originals but also cover the artists that inspire them most such as: Iron & Wine, Ani Difranco, the Beattles, Jose Gonzalas, Great Lake Swimmers, Feist, and the Be Good Tanyas.
One of the passions of this duo is to collaborate with other musicians. The Shook Twins have shared stages and played with a fair amount of musicians such as: Mason Jennings, Michelle Shocked, Johnatha Brooks, JJ Grey and MoFro, Ryan Adams, Soul Asylum, The Bodeans, Frame of Mind, Equaleyes, Elephant Revival, DeMarco, Josh Hedlund, Kaylee Cole, Karli Fairbanks, Joel Smith, Hockey, Tiffany Christopher, John Craigie, Shari Short, Beth Pederson, and many more.
In 2007, The Shook Twins went down to Santa Cruz, CA in December to record their first full-length album at Indigital Studio with producer and friend, Brody Bergholz. The album "You Can Have the Rest" features Lane Exworthy on cello and Kyle Volkman on bass and djembe. It has been very successful in the area, and received highly complimentary press reviews. For example, Patrick Jacobs of the Spokesman Review (March 8 th 2008) stated that
"'...You Can Have the Rest' will surely rank as one of the finest Inland Northwest albums of all time..."
Also John Reuter of the Sandpoint Reader (January 31 st 2008) wrote:
"...While the Shook Twins describe themselves as "acoustic, indie, folk, pop," the pop label clearly no longer fits... with the help of Producer/Engineer Brody Bergholz, the Twins have created a deeper, multi-layered sound which manages to acknowledge disappointment and heartbreak with out going over-the-top and becoming just another self-satisfied 'dark' album..."
Luke Baumgarten of Spokane's Inlander (November 22 nd 2007) wrote a review of a live show:
"...The sisters have added Kyle Volkman on bass and hand percussion, and Lane Exworthy on the cello. The addition adds more than the sum of its parts. Where the Shooks' music was once poppy and light, it now has a groove and a gravity. It's exciting. Exworthy's cello is lithe and expressive while Volkman brings a steady backbone. The foursome has taken the twosome to a whole new level..."
Most recently the twins have moved to Porland, OR with their two best friends. They will be working on improving their act as a duo, while keeping their ears out for other musicians to join the team.
The goal is to travel this country from east coast to west, bringing their music and message to as many ears as possible, keeping true and grounded as the process unfolds.
